Allow me to start off this month’s article by honoring my Irish readers, as well as all of us that feel Irish around St. Patrick’s Day, with two of my favorite Irish toasts:

“May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live.”

“May you live to be a hundred years – with one extra year to repent.”

These toasts provide a great lead in for this month’s topic on Senior Safety. Seniors are the fastest growing population group in the United States. In 2000, there were an estimated 35 million people age 65 and older, representing about 13 percent of the population. It is predicted that by 2030, this number will double to 70 million people, or about 20 percent. One in five Americans will be age 65 and older! (more…)

This fraud generally involves the preparation and filing of false income tax returns by tax preparers who claim inflated personal or business expenses, false deductions, and/or unallowable exemptions on returns. These tax preparers may manipulate income figures to obtain tax credits, such as earned income tax credits. While the taxpayer may not be aware of this fraudulent activity, the IRS will hold them (you) accountable. (more…)

Winter has come in like a lion! It was only weeks ago that we were basking in the sun and running our air conditioners day and night. We aren’t running our air conditioners so often any more and we now actually turn on the heat, especially in the evening. No matter how cold it gets in Florida, however, we can always rest in the glow we receive every time we talk to our friends up in the snowy North and Midwest.

As the temperature drops we need to focus some attention on the serious subject of fire. Just the word “Fire” causes quivers and shakes in many of us and for good reason. (more…)

The holidays are finally here. It’s a wonderful time to relax in your beautiful home, especially now that the weather in Florida has turned so perfect. Sitting back and thinking about the past year as the New Year approaches, all in your comfortable and ‘very secure and protected’ abode is what all of us dream about when we think of the holidays.

Of course, it is just a dream because most of us will be traveling during the holiday season and, for many of us, this will involve air travel. It’s that wonderful, glorious time of the year. The weather has finally turned cooler, the major storms are gone, and we Floridians can finally come out of our cocoons and enjoy all the reasons why we came to live here in the first place.

It’s also the time of the year when we begin to think about the upcoming holidays and that means holiday shopping. While I don’t want to dampen your enthusiasm or your shopping experience, I do want to offer a few safety tips when you go holiday shopping.

Criminals are fully aware that people will be out, with usually a significant amount of money and valuables on both their person and in their vehicles. Beware of purse snatchings, pickpockets and auto break-ins since thefts increase this time of the year.

Who doesn’t love a baby? They are so small, soft and innocent and totally reliant on others for their care and well being. This responsibility which is placed on many of us – either full-time or for just short periods of time – can sometimes feel awesome.

Baby and toddler safety will appropriately be recognized this month since September has been designated as national Baby Safety Month. Whether you have a child, grandchild, or just know those that do, baby and toddler safety is a major issue in today’s world. Did you know that August is National Inventors Month? The first week of August is National Clown Week and the second week of the month is National Smile Week. The third week of August, however, is the one which everyone in Florida should surely celebrate since it is Air Conditioning Appreciation Week.

While August has other noteworthy dates, such as August fifth which is National Mustard Day, it unfortunately also marks a time when home burglaries significantly increase. (more…)
